Since the discovery of antibiotics, it has save millions and millions of lives globally. The danger is the possible of overuse and the creation of superbugs or in other words bacteria that is resistant to antibiotics. The scary time is when the antibiotics will not be effective for common infections. What is known is that superbugs are already here and the question is how long do we have before it gets out of hand. Recently a lady from state of Nevada passed away from a infection that was not curable because it was resistant to 25 different antibiotics that was given to her. The story was published from the CDC and prevention, so this is a very and concerning issue. The infection that the Nevada lady had had a scientific name but was given a another name of “nightmare super-bug”. This is a very scary name especially coming from the health industry. This lady is not also the first to be killed by a superbug as it is estimated that over 23,000 have succumbed to a variety of these bugs every year. Looking at the global level, close to 700,000 have passed away because of these bacterial that were resistant to the antibiotics. In those global situations, you have to take into account the unavailability of medical care and many of those infected were discovered much later where the infection was already spread.
Looking back at the Nevada case, the lady came into the medical care at an early stage of the infection and was provided with all types of antibiotics. She was a also in her 70s and visited India previously where she had broken a bone in her leg. At that time she visited many hospitals in India because of minor infections. When she came back to the states, she still had health issues and was admitted to a Reno hospital where it was discovered that she had a superbug or a CRE infection. An infection of CRE is rare at the moment and it has been reported that there was close to 200 known cases. This type infection is more commonly found in poor countries and can spread easier because of and non sanitary facilities. Because of this Nevada incident, health officials are looking on ways to prevent superbugs from travelling country to country especially. Preventative efforts are becoming the utmost importance and travel history may be just as important as your hereditary history.
